When you can’t gather in person with friends for Thanksgiving, do the next best thing—meet up on Zoom for a virtual Friendsgiving. And instead of turkey, whip up some apps and drinks to enjoy while you talk. Gaby Dalkin, the talented cookbook author and food blogger behind What's Gaby Cooking, loves a simple retro shrimp cocktail, especially when it’s paired with Bloody Mary shooters made with her signature cocktail mix.

Ingredients

  • 3 lemons
  • 1 onion, quartered
  • 2 Tbs. kosher salt
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 10 black peppercorns
  • 2 lb. (1 kg) large shrimp, with the shells on
  • 10 cups (5 lb./2.5 kg) crushed ice
  • Cocktail sauce for serving
  • Prepared horseradish for serving

Directions

Halve one of the lemons. Squeeze the juice from the lemon into a large pot filled with water, then add the lemon halves, onion, salt, bay leaves and peppercorns. Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the shrimp and cook until they are just opaque throughout, about 3 minutes. Drain and let cool. Refrigerate until cold, at least 2 hours or up to overnight.

When ready to serve, cut the remaining 2 lemons into thin wheels. Place the crushed ice on a large serving platter. Top with the shrimp and serve with the lemon wheels, cocktail sauce and horseradish alongside. Serves 6.
