“This cocktail is for all of the Mr. and Mrs. Clauses of the world,” says College Housewife blogger and cookbook author Elizabeth Van Lierde. “It's that cocktail you have after you've finished wrapping all the holiday presents and need something seasonal and fresh to end the night with. The notes of cranberry, rosemary and whiskey are the most perfect blend of holiday flavors.” Van Lierde’s contribution to the 12 Days of Cocktails uses a rosemary-infused simple syrup that’s easy to make and great to have on hand for holiday cocktail parties. And for extra yuletide flair, she likes to garnish the drink with sugared cranberries, which are made by dipping a handful of cranberries and rosemary sprigs into water, sprinkling them with sugar, and letting them dry.

Ingredients:

For the rosemary simple syrup:

  • 1 cup (8 fl. oz./250 ml) water
  • 1 cup (7 oz./200 g) sugar
  • 3 rosemary sprigs


For the Cranberry Whiskey Cocktail:

  • 2 fl. oz. (60 ml) cranberry juice
  • Cinnamon Sticks or 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 2 fl. oz. (60 ml) whiskey or bourbon
  • Sugared cranberries (optional)

Directions:

First, make the rosemary simple syrup. In a small saucepan, combine the water and sugar and bring to a simmer. Remove from the heat and add the rosemary sprigs. Steep for 20 minutes and strain mixture into a jar.

To make the cocktail, break the cinnamon stick in half or add in 1/4 tsp. of ground cinnamon to a cocktail shaker. Add the cranberry juice, whiskey, 1 1/2 Tbs. of the rosemary simple syrup and ice. Shake for 30 seconds. Pour into a coupe glass. Garnish with rosemary sprigs and sugared cranberries, if using, and serve. Makes 1 drink.
