Elizabeth Van Lierde, the blogger and cookbook author behind the College Housewife, created this holiday riff on the classic Old Fashioned while spending a snowy evening in Aspen with some close friends. “We got snowed in and ended up making these warming vanilla bean Old Fashioneds and playing Monopoly all night,” Van Lierde says. “The Old Fashioned is perfect for the holidays and with the added notes of vanilla, this classic becomes so much more memorable and aromatic.”

Ingredients:

  • 1 vanilla bean
  • 2 tsp. warm water
  • 1 tsp. granulated sugar or 1 sugar cube
  • 3 to 4 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 fl. oz. (60 ml) bourbon
  • Orange zest strip

Directions:

Using a small paring knife, split the vanilla bean lengthwise and scrape out half the seeds. Combine the seeds, sugar and warm water in a lowball glass. Mix the ingredients together with a wooden muddler or spoon until the sugar is dissolved. Add the bitters to the glass. Fill the glass with 1 large square ice cube or 3 to 4 small ice cubes and add the bourbon. Stir for 15 to 20 seconds until well chilled. Twist the orange zest strip to express oils into the glass and then drop the zest into the cocktail. Top with a cherry or scraped vanilla bean and serve. Makes 1 drink.
